“VERNA” (lit: Or Else) is the story of a highly educated and pretty girl Sara. Born to affluent parents who both teach at a university she believes in standing up for what is right. Out of her ideals of righteousness she goes on marrying a polio stricken young musician. They make a lovely couple leading a wonderfully happy life until something terrible disrupts.
The story of "VERNA" incorporates the most commonly held myths and biases around rape. It breaks the myth that only poor women get raped, it happens in dark lonely allies and the rapists are uneducated savages.
Rape is one of the most prevalent and ugly forms of crimes against women. According to Human Rights Commission of Pakistan, one woman is raped in Pakistan every two hours. Globally Pakistan has been ranked third from the bottom as the most dangerous country for women in the world. Rape is used as a tool of powerful in the society to humiliate and invoke fear among the vulnerable. Bodies of women have become the battleground for men to fight their battles for honor, power, and revenge.
Sara knows that the whole society would punish and stigmatize her and protect the rapist yet she decides to take a stand even if it means fighting the whole political and social system.
Directed and to be produced by Shoaib Mansoor under his company Shoman Productions. It stars Mahira Khan and Haroon Shahid in leading roles. The film is scheduled to release on 17 November 2017 and will be distributed by Hum Films. From the director of Khuda Kay Liye & Bol.
